Difficulty modes compared
Facts checked 2026-10-28
Wayfarer is the power-fantasy setting, Pathbreaker is the standard challenge, Hellwalker gives bosses adaptive AI, and 66 Days adds a 66-life limit to Hellwalker with a save wipe if you run out.
Phantom Blade Zero has four difficulty settings, and they are not simple multiplier switches. S-GAME built them as separate experiences: Wayfarer lets the combat system look good, Hellwalker changes how bosses think, and 66 Days turns death into a resource.
Trophies are not tied to difficulty: the platinum is available on the easiest setting, which makes the choice about the run you want rather than the trophies you need. If you are still learning the tells, read combat basics before choosing a mode.
The four modes
| Mode | What changes | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Wayfarer | Enemies hit softer and recover posture more slowly | First run, or anyone who wants the power fantasy |
| Pathbreaker | Standard damage and posture tuning | Players with character-action experience |
| Hellwalker | Bosses adapt to your style in real time instead of running fixed patterns | Second run, or a first run for masochists |
| 66 Days | Hellwalker behaviour plus a 66-life counter | Endurance players chasing the game's hardest framing |
What actually changes in Hellwalker
Hit points are the least interesting difference. The headline change is that bosses stop relying on fixed patterns and adjust to how you attack: if you spam one combo, they answer it. That makes the fight a conversation rather than a memorisation test, and it is why Hellwalker players report the game feeling almost like a different design.
For a first playthrough, that is a hard way to learn the colour tells. For a second, it is the reason to come back.
66 Days, precisely
66 Days is the mode the story is named after. You start with 66 lives. Each death removes one. If the counter reaches zero, the run ends: the save is wiped, and you start again.
That is not a difficulty slider, it is a stake. It also explains the mode's reputation: the combat is identical to Hellwalker, but every fight you would normally brute-force becomes a decision about whether to risk a life.
:: warning Do not pick 66 Days for a first run. You cannot learn a boss's tells and protect a 66-life counter at the same time. Finish the game once, then come back.
