Boss tactics: reading the colour tells

Facts checked 2026-10-28

Quick answer

Every boss attack is answered by one of three actions. Learn the colour, not the animation: blue means parry, red means dodge, black means get out of the way entirely.

Every Phantom Blade Zero boss is built from the same grammar: a tell, an answer, a punish window. The bosses get harder by combining answers, not by inventing new ones. Once you can see the grammar, a new boss is a reading exercise rather than a wall.

This is the method, in the order you should apply it.

The loop

  1. Watch one full string without attacking. Not to learn damage, to learn the colour order.
  2. Answer only the last hit of the string. Most players die trying to answer every hit; the last one is the one that kills.
  3. Punish with two lights, not a heavy. Two lights keep the posture bar falling without committing you.
  4. Break the bar, then spend. Heavies and Phantom Edge uses go inside the break window, never before it.
  5. Reset to neutral. Back off, let the cooldown clear, refill sha-chi with a parry or a swap.

That loop works on Axemaster Peng Meng and it works on the Four Great Puppets. What changes is how many strings you have to read before a break.

Colour discipline

TellAnswerCommon mistake
Blue flashParryDodging because it looks big
Red flashDodge, lateParrying because it looks like a sword swing
Black flashMove out of rangeBlocking, which does nothing
No flash, long wind-upWait, then parry or punish recoveryPanic-rolling early and eating the hit

The black-flash attacks are the ones that end runs, because they are the ones players try to tank. If you take one habit from this page: when the screen goes dark, stop pressing defence.

Phase changes

Most bosses change behaviour at roughly two-thirds and one-third health. The tells are not subtle: a new weapon, a new arena, a roar that interrupts your combo.

What to do at a phase change:

  • Stop attacking. The transition usually has a free hit attached, and it is not worth trading for.
  • Re-read the first string. New phase, new colour order. Do not assume the old parry rhythm carries over.
  • Check your resources. If you entered the phase with no sha-chi and one Phantom Edge use, play the first minute defensively.

Duo and trio fights

The multi-target fights are where most players stall: the Saw and the Crusher, Zhu Yuan and Bi Feng, the three Wardens, the Blackwater trio, the Four Great Puppets.

Three rules:

  1. Fight the one that is attacking. Do not chase the passive one; you will eat the active one's string from behind.
  2. Use the edge that clears space. Tiger Cannon or any area Phantom Edge exists for exactly these fights.
  3. Kill the ranged one first. The One-Eyed Archer in the Blackwater trio and any archer-type in a group fight will punish you every time you commit to a melee target.

Resource discipline

Entering a boss with full sha-chi and two edge uses is worth more than ten extra attack points. Before you walk into the arena, top up: parry a basic enemy, swap weapons, rest if the route allows.

The sha-chi page explains the refill; the upgrades page explains why one strong weapon beats three average ones.

When to walk away

If you have died ten times to the same string, the problem is not the boss. Go upgrade, find another Amber Shard, or drop a difficulty for the fight. The difficulty page is explicit that nothing in the trophy list cares.

FAQ

Should I watch boss guides before fighting?

Fight blind once. The tells are designed to be read, and a video teaches you the answer without teaching you the read. Use a guide after the third death.

Is there a parry window indicator?

No. The window is generous by genre standards but invisible; you learn it by sound and by the flash timing.

Do bosses have weakness elements?

The build does not present elemental weaknesses as a boss system. Posture damage and clean answers matter more than damage type.

How do I beat the Four Great Puppets?

Treat it as four separate duels in one arena: isolate one, break it, finish it, reset. The boss list has the roster; this page's duo rules apply unchanged.
